Project Zomboid Build 42 server hosting update from Metrly

Project Zomboid Build 42 server hosting is now available on Metrly, and it is the recommended default for new deployments.

You can launch a fresh Build 42 server from the marketplace, keep an established community on Build 41, or select a custom Steam branch when you need something more specific.

The zombies are still a problem. The server setup does not need to be.

Build 42 Is Now the Default

New Project Zomboid servers now default to Build 42, the current stable release.

During deployment, you can choose from:

The selected version is configured as part of deployment, so there is no need to manually find and edit Steam branch variables.

Existing Servers Will Not Be Changed Automatically

Existing Project Zomboid servers will stay on their current version unless you choose to switch them.

That matters because Build 41 worlds, clients, and mods are not automatically compatible with Build 42. Moving an established server between major builds should be planned, especially when a large Workshop collection or long-running world is involved.

Switch Versions From the Metrly Console

Existing Project Zomboid servers now include a dedicated Version Switcher inside the Metrly Console.

The Version Switcher detects the server’s current release and lets you move between Build 42, Build 41, or a custom Steam branch.

Before the switch begins, Metrly clearly explains what will happen:

1. The server is stopped

2. An optional safety backup is created

3. The selected Steam branch is applied

4. The server installation is refreshed

5. Existing server files remain in place

Safety backups are enabled by default when your account has permission to create them.

Check Compatibility Before Switching

Changing the server version does not automatically convert worlds, mods, or client installations.

Before moving an established server to Build 42, we recommend:

A 100-mod collection is still a 100-mod collection. Metrly can manage the server change, but it cannot convince every abandoned Workshop item to support Build 42.

Starting a separate Build 42 server remains the safest option when you want to test the new release without touching an established Build 41 world.

Available Now

Project Zomboid Build 42 servers are available through the Metrly marketplace now.

Select Project Zomboid, choose Build 42, configure your server, and deploy.

New Metrly accounts begin with a $10 starting credit. Billing does not begin until that credit has been used.
